The Colorado Rockies head into tonight’s matchup with the big-money Los Angeles Dodgers having won four of their last five games. While their overall record still sits well below .500 and points toward a long second half of the season, an 11-9 stretch over their last 20 contests shows they have been playing much more competitive baseball lately. They are coming off a tight 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins, where the offense managed just a couple of runs on seven hits, but the effort was there. Colorado looks to start a new streak when first pitch arrives at 8:10 p.m. MT.

The Dodgers sit comfortably near the top of the standings and have won 14 of their last 20 games to maintain their dominant pace, a run highlighted by manager Dave Roberts recently crossing the 1,000-win threshold. Like the Rockies, Los Angeles dropped its most recent game – a 5-2 defeat to the San Diego Padres – but the Dodgers remain a massive test at home.

To compete tonight, Colorado needs its pitching to hold down a potent Los Angeles lineup and keep the margin narrow into the late innings. If the Rockies can rely on clean defense and manufacture a few timely runs early, they have a realistic path to pulling off an upset on the road.

The Breakdown

Tonight’s starting pitching matchup features Colorado’s Kyle Freeland squaring off against Los Angeles’ Eric Lauer, and the contrast in their recent form tells you everything you need to know about this game.

Freeland is battling through a brutal stretch. Over a recent 52-inning sample across his starts, the veteran southpaw has pitched to an atrocious 8.31 ERA. The most alarming issue is his vulnerability to base hits. He is yielding a staggering 13.67 hits per nine innings over this span while allowing opponents to bat .342 (that’s not a typo) against him. He has to find a way to induce weaker contact against a deep Dodgers lineup that will relentlessly punish mistakes over the middle of the plate.

On the other side, Lauer has been much more effective across his recent workload. Over a 34.1-inning stretch, Lauer boasts a 2.88 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. Oddly, he’s succeeding without racking up strikeouts, fanning just 4.72 batters per nine innings. Instead, Lauer is limiting the opposition by pounding the zone, pitching to contact, and letting his defense work, surrendering only 7.08 hits and 2.36 walks per nine.

The defining matchup tonight is whether Colorado’s surging offense can crack Lauer’s pitch-to-contact approach. While the Rockies have struggled overall this season, they have been a force at the plate over their last 10 games, leading the league during that span with 7.4 runs per contest alongside a .293 team batting average. Los Angeles is thriving offensively as well, averaging six runs over their own last 10 games, setting the stage for plenty of traffic on the basepaths.

For the Rockies to secure a road win tonight, Freeland has to stop the bleeding and keep the Dodgers from stringing together early hits. If he limits the damage and navigates his way into the middle innings, Colorado’s red-hot lineup has proven it can generate the firepower to out-slug opponents right now.

Odds & Lines

Our Pick

Taking the Dodgers on the moneyline at -236 offers virtually zero return on investment, so we have to look elsewhere for value in tonight’s matchup. The smartest angle here is targeting the total, especially given how aggressively both lineups are swinging the bats.

Colorado has been on an offensive tear recently, possessing the firepower to scratch across runs even against a formidable Los Angeles pitching staff. However, the deciding factor is the Rockies’ persistent pitching woes. Beyond Kyle Freeland’s vulnerability to base hits, Colorado will eventually hand the ball over to a relief corps saddled with a dismal 5.02 bullpen ERA. Once the Dodgers get into the middle and late innings, their deep lineup is well-positioned to do serious damage against a struggling group of relievers. Both teams are fully capable of putting up crooked numbers right now.

Caesars currently has the total set at 9.5, with the over sitting at -122. If you want to jump on this play, be sure to take advantage of the Caesars promo for new users.

Pick: Over 9.5 (-122)

Player Prop Pick

There are several intriguing angles for tonight’s matchup, but the most compelling value lies with Colorado’s Hunter Goodman in the total bases market.

Goodman is tearing the cover off the ball over his last 10 games, posting a 1.218 OPS while mashing six home runs and driving in 12. Fresh off the announcement of his second consecutive All-Star reserve selection, the catcher is locked in and matches up perfectly tonight against Dodgers southpaw Eric Lauer. Goodman thrives with the platoon advantage, boasting a robust .911 OPS against left-handed pitching this season. The slugger has already proven he can get to Lauer, going 2-for-6 with a home run in their brief career history.

The betting trends support this hot streak as well. Goodman has comfortably eclipsed the 1.5 total bases mark in four consecutive games, averaging 2.8 total bases per contest during that span. DraftKings is currently offering the over at +104, providing excellent plus-money value on a hitter seeing the ball well.
