The Denver Broncos might be in line to snag one of the best free agent tight end options available on Monday if all things go according to plan. Former Jacksonville Jaguars standout tight end Evan Engram is visiting Denver today, and if everything checks out from the medical side of things, Sean Payton might have his new tight end.
Denver Broncos hosting TE Evan Engram on free agency visit
Back in the day when NFL Free Agency began, teams used to host players all the time before signing players to deals. The game has changed a little bit with how things operate today, but the Denver Broncos are going back in time.
ICYMI: Denver Broncos re-sign D.J. Jones to three-year deal
Former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Evan Engram, who was recently released by the team with a failed physical designation, is visiting the Broncos today as the NFL’s legal negotiating period begins at 10:00 a.m. MT. The Broncos want to ensure Engram’s shoulder injury, which he had surgery on last season, is healed and won’t be something that interferes with his ability to stay available.
As Mike Klis of 9News reiterated, Denver wants to be sure about the shoulder, but things should check out on that side, which could lead to things escalating quickly toward him potentially signing.
Engram’s 6’3 size, and his athleticism combined with him being 240 pounds is something the Broncos don’t have at the tight end position. He immediately becomes the best player at the position if he does, in fact, choose to sign in Denver pending medicals.
In 2023, Engram caught 114 passes on 143 targets for Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars, hauling in four receiving touchdowns and finishing with 963 yards in 17 games.
Before his injury last season, Engram had 47 catches in nine games for the Jaguars before his shoulder injury shut his season down. His name was also thrown out around before the NFL Trade Deadline before his injury.
Now, he’s got a chance to land with the Broncos. Let the frenzy begin!
