The Broncos seem like a team on the edge of outbreak.
A week ago, running backs coach Curtis Modkins tested positive for COVID-19. He was the first. Then, it was offensive line coach Mike Munchak this week, and the first player positive during the season in right guard Graham Glasgow on Friday.
That meant shutting down practice for the entire team Friday, with backup linemen Austin Schlottmann and Demar Dotson self-isolating.
When they tested negative on Saturday, the team practiced again, but now defensive coordinator Ed Donatell has tested positive and will not coach in today’s game. That, according to the team.
All told, that’s three coaches — two of which (Munchak, Donatell) who won’t coach today — and one player who’s tested positive for Denver. All things considered, the Broncos have had good fortune around COVID-19.
Von Miller contracted it, but that was back in April, and he recovered by the time the season came around. Of course, he also injured his ankle and has missed the entire season to this point.
Other teams like the Tennessee Titans have seen major outbreaks, but now the Broncos look to be among the teams who are in the middle of the pack, like the Patriots.
Surprisingly, even with multiple positives for Denver and one positive test for the Chargers this week, too, Broncos – Chargers is still on and scheduled to kick off at 2:05 p.m. MT in the Mile High City today.
Donatell being unable to coach means Vic Fangio coaching the defense and calling the plays today. Donatell and Fangio have coached together for many years, but it’s been Donatell’s defense which has turned up the pressure the last two games against Cam Newton and Patrick Mahomes.
It will be interesting to see what kind of game Fangio calls today. Also of note, he’s been only so-so in terms of challenges and clock management this year. With the new play-calling responsibilities, other head coaching responsibilities may fall to the wayside. That’s certainly something to keep an eye on, especially if the game is close.
With starting guard Glasgow out, Schlottmann is slotted into his spot and will start today. Schlottmann started the last four games for the team last season, with mixed results, and he’s struggled this year when he’s played. Glasgow was supposed to be a superb signing for the offensive line, but he’s failed to play to his potential this year.
Still, Glasgow is undoubtedly better than Schlottmann, meaning Denver’s right side of their line will be a weakness today against Los Angeles.
Dotson, who’s played well at right tackle while filling in for Elijah Wilkinson, will have to face monstrous pass-rusher Joey Bosa today. Bosa has racked up 4.5 sacks this season, which ties him for 13th in the NFL among many other great edge rushers.
Keep an eye on that right side of the line today when Drew Lock drops back, especially when he’s looking to go deep and has to take more time to throw.
