Brandon Brown hit a three-pointer with 0.9 seconds left to lift Loyola Marymount to a 69-66 victory over Colorado State at Moby Arena, Dec. 19. With the loss, the Rams fell to 8-4 on the year while the Lions improved to 6-3.
In the opening half, the Rams fought through several small scoring droughts but only trailed by three at the halftime break, 30-27. CSU came out strong offensively to start the second half, eventually building a 10-point lead with just over nine minutes to go in the game. From there, the Rams struggled to find the basket, including not hitting a field goal for the last 6:27 of the game. The game was tied at 62, 64 and 66 before the game-winning basket.
“This team’s young. They (LMU) are the 11th oldest team in the country and we’re the 20th youngest team in the country. I think that explains it all,” head coach Larry Eustachy said postgame.
Colorado State finished at 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the field, while Loyola Marymount finished also at 43.1 percent (25-of-58). CSU was just 15-of-22 (68.2 percent) from the free throw line, while LMU was 14-of-21 (66.7 percent). Both teams committed 14 turnovers in the contest.
The Rams had four players in double figures, led by senior forward Emmanuel Omogbo with 15 points and six rebounds. Junior forward Che Bob had 14 points and six boards off the bench, while senior guard Gian Clavell and sophomore guard Prentiss Nixon added 11 and 10, respectively. LMU was led by Brown’s 22 points while Stefan Jovanovic had 21 points and 8 rebounds.
