Of the 10 Rams to reach the national championships, six athletes represent the men’s team and four athletes represent the women’s team. Headlining the men’s competitors is Mostafa Hassan, who enters this week as the No. 1 seed in the shot put. Hassan leads the nation (69-11/21.31m) and ranks eighth in the world in the shot put this outdoor season. Seeds for the NCAA Championships are based only upon performances in the NCAA preliminaries.
CSU is one of five programs in the nation with two decathletes in the NCAA Championships (Arkansas, Georgia, Oregon and Texas). Hunter Price enters as the nation’s ninth-ranked decathlete with a program-record score of 7,801 at the Mt. SAC/California Invitational Combined Events. Price, who also ranks 32nd in the world in the decathlon, is the No. 2 performer in the event in Mountain West history. Cogdill, who ranks 20th in the NCAA and 66th in the world in the decathlon, scored 7,508 points at the MW Championships en route to his unprecedented third-straight decathlon title.
CSU has the only distance program in the nation with two athletes qualified in the men’s 10,000 meters (Grant Fischer, Jerrell Mock) and a different athlete qualified in the men’s 5,000 meters (Cole Rockhold). Fischer placed sixth at the NCAA West Preliminary, while Mock placed ninth. Mock (28:11.80) and Fischer (28:45.83) rank first and second, respectively, in program history in the 10,000 with times run at the Stanford Invitational on March 31.
The highest-seeded athlete on the women’s side based upon preliminary performances is hurdler Lorenda Holston. The senior ran a wind-aided preliminaries time of 13.05 to earn a No. 12 seed in the 100-meter hurdles this week. MW steeplechase champion Janelle Lincks won her heat at the NCAA West Preliminary with a time of 10:14.34, earning a No. 20 seed this week.
Two throwers round out NCAA Championships qualifiers on the women’s side. Two-time Honorable Mention All-American and seven-time MW shot put champion Aaliyah Pete is seeded 18th in the women’s shot put, while 2017 MW women’s hammer champion Linnea Jonsson is the No. 14 seed in her respective event.
