In the 30 days leading up to the start of Denver Broncos Training Camp 2016, we’re examining 30 big questions for the season. We’ll make a case for each answer; you’ll vote and tell Broncos Country what’s going to happen this year.
As the Denver Broncos have come to find out, there is a price to pay following a Super Bowl victory. When the free agency period rolled around just one month after their championship, the Broncos roster was ravaged in free agency.
John Elway has patched several of those holes with other free agents – Jared Crick and Mark Sanchez for example – while using the first rounds of the draft to select players who will make their biggest impact in 2017 and beyond. Still, Gary Kubiak not going to let his early round picks ride the pine if they can contribute right away.
Here are a few early round selections that have a shot to make some noise this year for the defending Super Bowl champions.
Devontae Booker has made it known that he’s coming to Denver to take someone’s job. The Broncos seem to have found their starting running back when they signed C.J. Anderson to a four-year, $18 million contract earlier in the offseason. Even if Anderson has the starting spot locked down, Booker has a good of a chance as anyone to snag the second running back position. With Kubiak’s offense in full swing in 2016, the fourth-round pick could turn out to be the biggest steal of the draft.
Adam Gotsis was drafted in the second round out of Georgia Tech; the Australian rules football player turned American football player was drafted to help fill the void in the middle left by Malik Jackson. Fortunately for Gotsis, the Broncos still possess one of the best front sevens in the National Football League. Having Gotsis on the defensive line will either help free up other Broncos to make plays or allow him to make the plays himself. Gotsis was lucky enough to land on the best defense in the NFL and could easily emerge as the rookie who makes a big impact as a result.
After Peyton Manning retired and presumed starter Brock Osweiler left for the Houston Texans, the Broncos were left with Trevor Siemian as the only quarterback on the roster. As a result, the Broncos signed veteran Mark Sanchez and traded up to select Paxton Lynch from the University of Memphis. The quarterback competition appears in the early going to be a two horse race between Sanchez and Siemian, but it’s unlikely they keep their No. 1 draft pick on the bench if those two can’t get the job done. If Lynch does find himself in the starting role at any point during the season, he has the weapons around him to make a big impact in his rookie year. The Broncos obviously think very highly of him to draft his with their first selection, so there is reason to believe that he can’t step in and be successful if called upon.
Justin Simmons has potential to step into a backup position in the secondary and make a significant contribution to the “No Fly Zone” right away. Simmons will more than likely fill the void that David Bruton left when he signed with the Washington Redskins. If Simmons can hold his own in Denver’s scary secondary, s well as contribute on special teams, he can easily become the rookie with biggest impact in 2016.
