Chad Bettis has a new perspective on life after battling and beating testicular cancer last year. The 28-year-old Rockies pitcher is looking forward to start the 2018 season, especially after accepting that baseball cannot always be his number one priority.
“I think there are a lot of times… earlier in my career, where I felt like baseball taking kind of control of everything, really,” Bettis told Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 inside the clubhouse of Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. “Having to go through what the cancer and the chemo felt like really put everything into perspective in the sense of getting everything in pecking order, as if you would. So, faith and family first, and then baseball is after that, and everything else follows course, but it’s definitely changed my perspective for sure.”
Bettis is proud to have overcome his battle with cancer, but he also wants to be recognized for his skills as a pitcher. “Hopefully it can be both, you know. I think that’s kind of part of it… being on the other side of it now as a cancer survivor, I feel like it’s also my duty now to do as much as I can to help kids and help young men that are going through this,” Bettis said.
