Allowing five goals on 26 shots, Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov was clearly not at his best during Tuesday’s loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. As it turns out, there may be a physical reason why.
When asked if Varlamov was completely healthy during a radio appearance with Vic Lombardi on Wednesday morning, Avalanche coach simply said “no.” In fact, it will keep him sidelined through at least the All-Star break. As such, the Avalanche have recalled Spencer Martin from the San Antonio Rampage.
“This has been an ongoing problem for Varly, I think, over the last couple years,” explained Bednar. “He’s had a couple of these groin pulls this year, multiple now.”
With that, Varlamov is headed back to the shelf. When his groin is finally 100 percent is anyone’s guess.
“There’s a couple different [treatment] options that we can look at, and maybe he might spend more time than in,” said Bednar. “It’s hard to say, but that’s the doctors and trainers’ call. The players and the doctors and trainers have to make that call, and decide on what they feel is best for him and his career.”
