Denver Nuggets legend Alex English is a believer.
He not only believes that the Nuggets are a postseason contender, but he thinks they have the weapons and potential to be near the top of the conference.
Speaking with Sean Walsh and Renaud Notaro on Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, English said, “I think they can go all the way if they stay healthy. I think they’re one of the top three teams on the west coast for sure.”
English also noted that the level of competition in the West, including an improved Nuggets team, means it wouldn’t be an easy run for defending champions Golden State, a team with several All-Stars.
Speaking of All-Stars, he expects this to be the year Nikola Jokić is recognized as one, drawing comparisons to DeMarcus Cousins as a big man who can control the flow of the game and do everything on the floor. English thinks there could be another Nugget or two named to the All-Star team as well.
“Paul Millsap definitely was an All-Star in the East,” English shared with Sean Walsh, adding that he likes Gary Harris and Jamal Murray as potential All-Stars, too. But even with the talent that Harris and Murray display in the back court, they will have trouble garnering votes because of the number of big-name stars in the West.
As far as the Nuggets’ regular season is concerned, English stressed the importance of Millsap and Will Barton being healthy to provide Denver with the necessary depth to realize success. Managing injuries will be a focus for newly extended head coach Michael Malone, especially with the Nuggets first-round pick Michael Porter Jr. English said there’s no need to rush Porter Jr. back onto the court, but instead, to let him get healthy on his own schedule.
If they can stay healthy, English believes the Nuggets are built for the long run.
