The Denver Broncos enter the 2023 NFL season with renewed expectations after the team failed miserably last year. With Sean Payton running the show, the standard around the team has changed. Players, including linebacker Alex Singleton, are already picking up on the differences from last season to now.
Singleton caught up with Mile High Sports radio host Eric Goodman during training camp to talk about the new vibe around the team and what the standard is heading into year one of the Sean Payton era.
“We’re going to be good,” Singleton told Mile High Sports.” That’s what our standards are, to be great, and that should be your standard. That’s the way they treat everything. That’s the way they treat every mistake in meetings. The way they treat every little thing from the weight room, to on the field, to being on time, to taking your day off, to taking all the breaks seriously. That’s just the way it is, and that’s the way it’s going to be. I think that’s what makes it seem great, you have to prepare to be great.”
Payton has posted a winning record in 10 of his 15 seasons as a head coach in the NFL, and he is tasked with turning around a Broncos team that has failed to finish the regular season with a winning record since 2016.
One key to getting the team on the winning path is improving play at the quarterback position. Russell Wilson had the worst season of his career in 2022, and many are hopeful that Payton can provide him with the playbook to get his career back on track. While Singleton plays defense, he has seen improvements from Wilson so far throughout camp.
“Yeah, he looks good,” Singleton said. “I just think being in this offense now for the twelve weeks, everyone knows how much time he spends in the offseason by himself getting ready. He’s ready to go, he looks good, he’s going to be ready for Week 1, and I’m excited for that.”
Singleton was an impact player for the Broncos last season, starting 12 games and logging 163 total tackles. After a strong showing in 2022, the Broncos rewarded Singleton with a three-year, $18 million contract extension. While Singleton is excited about the contract extension, he’s focused on helping the team win in 2023 and beyond.
“Yeah, it’s nice,” he said. “I care more about playing football and winning football games. So it’s nice, it was nice in March. Now it’s getting ready for Week 1.”
