It was an extension for the ages. Eight years, $260 million is a franchise-record contract for the Colorado Rockies, and Nolan Arenado will remain the club’s third baseman for a long time.
The Rockies have made the playoffs now two years in a row and are hoping to make it three this upcoming season. Re-signing Arenado was a big step toward that goal.
Arenado sat down with Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Afternoon Drive on Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 during Spring Training to talk about his re-signing, as well as the what purchases he made after his big signing.
“We have a chance to do something special for sure,” Arenado said. “We definitely have a really good core group, that could become a dynasty hopefully one day, but we have a ways to go.”
The star third baseman is never satisfied.
Arenado finished third in the National League All-Star vote in 2018 and led the team with a 5.6 WAR, according to baseball reference.
“There’s always room to get better. I think I have room to grow as a player. I just want to be as consistent as I can,” Arenado said. “The last few years I have been but I think I can get better. I think I can have better at-bats. You know, last year I struggled towards the end and that really bothered me.”
Arenado has a 33.0 WAR, with a .291 batting average and 186 home runs, along with 616 runs driven in throughout his six-year career.
