More details have emerged in the tragic death of former Colorado Avalanche forward Marek Svatos. In a report released Monday, the Douglas County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the 34-year-old died of a drug overdose.
Svatos was found dead in his home in Lone Tree, Colo. on Nov. 5. The autopsy stated that the coroner’s office was unable to determine if the overdose was accidental. Blood panels found traces of codeine, morphine and Xanax in his system.
According to the report, Svatos had a history of heroin use and had spent time in drug rehabilitation facilities. It also stated that drug paraphernalia was found at the scene following his death. He was suspected to have suffered from depression, having suffered from suicidal thoughts and had recently dealt with “life stressors” and legal issues.
A seventh-round (227th overall) selection by the Avalanche in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Svatos would go on to play in 344 NHL games for the Avalanche, Ottawa Senators and Nashville Predators, scoring 100 goals and 172 points. He is survived by his wife, Diana, and their two sons.
