The Avalanche announced their first round of training camp cuts Wednesday afternoon, trimming the roster down to 38 skaters and four goalies.
Among the cuts was veteran forward Alex Galchenyuk, who was released from his professional tryout. Galchenyuk joined the Avs attempting to revive his once productive career. The 28-year-old has bounced around the league over the past three seasons, spending 2021-22 in Arizona where he had 21 points in 60 games with the Coyotes. Galchenyuk skated in each of the three training camp days and played one preaseson game before he was released.
Young goalie prospect Ivan Zhigalov, drafted with the last pick of the 2022 draft, was sent down to the Kingston Frotenacs junior team of the Ontario Hockey League. The remaining cuts were sent to the Colorado Eagles — the Avalanche’s AHL farm team in Loveland, Colo.

Following Tuesday’s preseason loss against the Minnesota Wild, Avs coach Jared Bednar said he expects to make cuts both before and after Wednesday’s contest in Vegas. The Golden Knights defeated the Avalanche 7-1 with Colorado’s lone third-period goal coming from young prospect Alex Beaucage.
