What looked to be headed for another disappointing Saturday night quickly flipped into the biggest win of the young season.
The Avalanche trailed the Dallas Stars by three goals before scoring six unanswered in the second half of the game to double up their division rivals 6-3 on the road. Colorado (11-5-0) is now just one point back of the Stars (11-4-1) for first in the Central Division.
Miles Wood got the scoring started for the Avs with 6:27 remaining in the second period. He took a feed from linemate Ross Colton and beat the defenseman using his speed before crashing the net and putting home his third of the season.
The Avalanche then got a power-play goal from Ryan Johansen before the break, setting up an eventual four-goal third period, which included the game-tying goal from Valeri Nichushkin early in the frame.
Mikko Rantanen and Andrew Cogliano put the Avs ahead thanks to a two-goal outburst in 11 seconds late in the third before Colton added the empty netter.
Cale Makar had three assists, becoming the fastest defenseman in NHL history to 200 helpers — accomplishing the feat in 254 games.
