The International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships is now in full swing and four members of the Colorado Avalanche participating. So, how have Tyson Jost, Mikko Rantanen, Pavel Francouz, and Sven Andrighetto performing for their respective national teams throughout the first weekend of the IIHF World Championships?
Tyson Jost (Canada)
Tyson Jost has never played in the IIHF World Championships before and proceeded to not play in Canada’s Friday night matchup with the United States — when the Canadians were shut out — but made up for his absence in Canada’s second game of the IIHF World Championships against South Korea.
Jost — in his IIHF World Championship debut — led the Canadians to a obliteration of South Korea with two goals as well as an assist for a three-point day to help Canada win 10-0.
“It was a fun game,” Jost told TSN following the victory. “It’s great to play with all of these awesome players. It’s an unbelievable experience.”
Jost and Canada will face off against Denmark at 12:15 PM MST on Monday afternoon for the third game of the preliminary round of the IIHF World Championships.
Mikko Rantanen (Finland)
Mikko Rantanen has been great for Finland throughout their dominant start of the IIHF World Championships. So far, Finland has outscored their opponents 16-2 in their first two preliminary match-ups against Korea first and followed by a win over Latvia.
Against Korea, Rantanen had two assists to go with three shots on net in 16 minutes of ice time in Finland’s 8-1 victory. Rantanen followed that performance with a goal and an assist against Latvia as he helped Finland to yet another 8-1 victory to begin the preliminary round with two wins against no losses.
Finland and Rantanen will face off against Norway on Tuesday as the IIHF World Championships continue.
Pavel Francouz (Czech Republic)
Francouz, the newest goaltending addition to the Avalanche, was in the net for the Czech Republic national team in what was an exciting 3-2 overtime win for the Czech Republic over Austria in the first preliminary game of the IIHF World Championships.
Francouz managed to register 15 saves in the 17 shots he faced while allowing two goals — one off of a tip. Francouz was eventually pulled with 2:45 left in regulation and replaced with an extra attacker. That move allowed the Czech Republic to score the game-tying goal before sending the game to overtime and eventually winning.
Francouz did not play in the second matchup of the IIHF World Championships and the Czech Republic fell 3-2 to Sweden without him.
Sven Andrighetto (Switzerland)
Andrighetto has had an eventful beginning to the IIHF World Championships. In his first game, he recorded two shots on net in a 3-2 overtime win over Austria but did not collect a point.
What Andrighetto did do is receive a five-minute major and a match penalty for kneeing Steven Strong of Austria at the 12-minute mark of the second period. Here is the video below of the hit that sent Strong off of the ice on a stretcher.

According to IIHF World Championship rules, any match penalty carries an immediate one-game suspension. Because of that, Andrighetto did not play in Switzerland’s second matchup with Slovakia.
The Swiss will play Finland next on Tuesday and Andrighetto should be available to get ice time in that matchup.
