The Colorado Avalanche re-signed defenseman Mark Barberio to a two-year contract on Tuesday, binding him to the team through the 2019-20 season. According to Mike Chambers of The Denver Post, Barberio will make $1.45 million in each season of the deal.
Barberio, 28, matched a career high with 13 points (3g, 10a) in 2017-18 and finished the season with a +6 plus-minus rating. Barberio ranked third on the team in time on ice, averaging 22:18 per game.
“Mark has been a steady part of our blue line since joining the team and has helped solidify our defensive depth,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President & General Manager Joe Sakic said in a statement released by the team. “He has played important minutes for us and has been a key penalty killer. We are pleased to have Mark under contract for the next two seasons.”
Though Barberio was prone to taking inopportune penalties on multiple occasions last season, the Avalanche still need him to play big minutes among the top three defensive pairings. He has scored 53 points (13g, 40a) in 239 career NHL games with Tampa, Montreal and Colorado.
