Sandwiched between Dylan and Luke McCaffrey at Valor Christian High School, Blake Stenstrom has flown under the radar. Still, the upcoming senior is already a commit to the Colorado Buffaloes even though he hasn’t seen significant time on the field. Now with Dylan on his way to Michigan, 2018 appears to be Stenstrom’s opportunity to prove his talent.
This offseason, Stenstom has already proven that his tangible skills are among the best of high school quarterbacks in the nation. On May 24, he was announced as one of the the 25 finalists for Elite 11, a quarterback competition that hosts some of the premier rising senior quarterbacks in the nation.
Adam Munsterteiger of Buff Stampede joined Mark Kiszla and Michael Klahr of Kiz and Klahr on Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 to discuss the accomplishment.
“The way they do it for the Elite 11 finals, it’s kind of a cool thing,” Munsterteiger said. “They don’t care about stars, they don’t really care about offers or stats from your junior season. They host these regional camps across the country, and if you perform really well at one of these camps, that’s what your invitation is going to be based on.”
For Stenstrom, this was the only format that gave him the ability to prove himself to some who may only see the McCaffrey name on Valor’s quarterback depth chart. Though some reporters who were involved with Valor football last season, including Kiszla, believed that Stenstrom outplayed McCaffrey at some of the team practices, it was McCaffrey who gathered the most chatter throughout his high school career. During the regional competition, Stenstrom showed the skills that Colorado saw in him prior to his signing.
“Blake Stenstrom went out to New Orleans and competed in a regional event out there, and during the testing portion of it actually ranked in the 98th percentile,” Munsterteiger said. “And this is a guy that is known more as a pocket passer, and a lot of those drills are agility, power and strength, so that was pretty impressive. He’s one of only 25 guys to get that invite, so now he gets to go to Los Angeles the first weekend in June to compete against those guys and see how he stacks up.”
