The 2018 NFL Draft is over and there are several ways one could judge whether a team had a successful draft or not.

Many believe that addressing positions of need is the most crucial aspect of a well rounded draft class. Others will argue that executives should simply take the most talented player available on the draft board. Some contend that quarterback should always be priority No. 1.

In an interview with Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, former Washington Redskins and Houston Texans general manager and current NFL Network analyst, Charley Casserly addressed the different factors that go into a successful draft class.

In a year where five high-profile arms went off the board in the first round alone, it’s evident that NFL franchises recognize — in most cases — you’re only as good as your quarterback.

The Broncos may not have found a future franchise quarterback in the 2018 NFL Draft, but they did secure one of the top talents on the board, selecting North Carolina State standout defensive end Bradley Chubb with the No. 5 overall pick, a pick that Casserly says brings consistency to the defense.

“Somebody sent the ‘hail mary’ when Chubb to fell to them,” Casserly said of the Broncos first round selection falling to Denver at No. 5 overall.

Listed at 6-foot-4, 269 pound quarterback killer is one of the most prominent defensive lineman to be taken early in the NFL Draft since the Texans selected Jadeveon Clowney in 2015. According to Casserly, Chubb looks a lot like Clowney physically, but was a better college football player than him.

“Chubb was more consistent and played the run better,” Casterly said. “Clowney was a highlight guy. Clowney was a better home run hitter, to use a baseball analogy. He has rare talent… I think Chubb will give you more consistency than Clowney.”
