Paxton Lynch could be in the best situation out of any quarterback drafted in 2016.
Lynch, if he becomes the starter, will have the best defense in the NFL and two of the best receivers in the league.
In 2015, the Broncos were able to take the AFC West and win the Super Bowl with a 40-year-old Peyton Manning who was in the bottom of the league in quarterback rating and had 17 interceptions with only nine touchdowns and an unreliable and inexperienced Brock Osweiler.
Former NFL quarterback Brady Quinn joined the Big Show on Tuesday and explained why Lynch’s transition will be easier with that Bronco defense.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Paxton Lynch got the opportunity to play at some point this season, and it probably has to do a little bit with the fact that we saw how far the Broncos were able to go last year even with the amount of turnovers that Brock Osweiler and Peyton Manning accounted for throughout the season,” Quinn said. “It wasn’t the best quarterback play, but the defense, special teams, were able to get the job done.”
Eventually Lynch will pass Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian on the depth chart; the question is when?
Although Lynch will have one of the best defenses to back him up, Quinn also added that it was important for him to become more accustomed to playing under center, something he rarely did at Memphis, where the majority of the snaps came from shotgun.
“Many sports have a flow or a sense of timing to all of them and a quarterback who’s under center usually has a better sense of how that feels, and his drops and through his progression will have better feet,” Quinn said. “He doesn’t have as good of a sense of timing when sitting back in shotgun.”
With Sanchez and Siemian competing for the starting gig and limited reps coming in training camp for the rookie, Lynch better progress quickly enough to impress Gary Kubiak, or he’ll never get a chance to play in 2016.
