The Sheriff.

Of all the nicknames in NFL history, that’s definitely one of the oddest. It’s not as if Peyton Manning has a Clint Eastwood persona or anything. Honestly, “The Responsible Father” might have been a better fit for No. 18.

And it’s not as if he earned it in some way; Jon Gruden just decided to start calling him it one day, and it stuck. If he wanted to call him “The Brain Surgeon,” we’d be calling him “The Brain Surgeon.”

But maybe there’s actually more substance behind “The Sheriff” than we even know. Maybe Brandon Marshall was on to something when he sent this tweet over three years ago, as a rookie linebacker in Jacksonville (little did he know he’d win a championship with Manning a few seasons later):

Oh. My. Gosh.

It all makes so much sense now.
