When John Elway tweets, Denver listens.
And when he sent out a tweet at just before 3:30 p.m. MST, Denver applauded. A Broncos favorite, Elway said, had been inked to a new, three-year contract extension.
That extension now belongs to Pro Bowl wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders. Elway sighted Sanders’ competitiveness and intensity in the tweet.
Sanders’ new contract is reportedly set at three years and $33 million, with $27 million guaranteed. That means that, with over 80 percent of the contract guaranteed, Sanders is all but assured to be on the roster through the entire duration of his contract — a rarity in today’s NFL.
Sanders’ contract situation had become a hot topic in Denver. The 2014 Pro Bowler, who has racked up 277 receptions, 2,539 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns, was about to head into the third and final year of his original contract with the Broncos, a three-year, $15 million agreement. With Sanders time as a Bronco potentially coming to an end, and with an unsettled quarterback situation in Denver, both sides apparently had motivation to complete a new deal.
Now, that deal is done.
Sanders is expected to play under his original $5.6 million salary in 2016, with the extension beginning next year, according to 9News’ Mike Klis.
