The Denver Broncos suffered their second big injury of 2017 training camp just two days in. Shane Ray will miss six to eight weeks with a torn wrist ligament, head coach Vance Joseph announced Friday.

Ray was wearing a brace on his left wrist during Thursday’s afternoon walkthrough and during Friday’s morning session.
The third-year linebacker will undergo surgery on Saturday to repair the damage.
#Broncos coach Vance Joseph said pass-rusher Shane Ray will have surgery tomorrow after tearing a ligament in his wrist. Out 6-8 weeks.

Following the Friday afternoon practice, Joseph gave a full explanation.
“At practice yesterday, Shane tore a ligament in his left wrist just taking on a block. His wrist got caught the flip way and he tore a ligament. He worked through it yesterday and he worked through it today. We got X-Ray’s and he needs surgery. It’s going to be six to eight weeks. He should go in [for surgery] tomorrow morning and be out by lunch, probably. But, he’s going to be out six to eight weeks. Right now, he’ll be counting weeks. Hopefully he’s back [soon]. We’re hopeful he’ll be back by Buffalo. It’s really weird because it’s the same area as [RB Devontae] Booker. Booker had the bone that was fractured. His (Ray) has the ligament torn that’s attached to the same bone that Booker fractured. That’s where we are. It happens. I’m disappointed again for the player more than us. He’s worked so hard also, and he’s making strides to have a great year. It happens. Injuries happen. In my opinion, they’re going to happen. Right now, I think we’re in great shape. They’re happening early so we can get these guys back for the full season. Obviously, I’m disappointed for him.”
Denver lost their leading rusher from 2016, Devontae Booker, to a wrist fracture on Wednesday – the night before training camp opened.
Denver is already thin at OLB with Shaquil Barrett out with a hip injury suffered in a private workout in May. The Broncos do not expect Barrett back until Week 2 at the earliest.
“Shaq’s timetable has not changed,” Joseph said. “We’re hoping to get Shaq back in the same area as those guys, hopefully Week 2 or 3. We should get a nice Christmas bonus in the first two weeks of the season, a nice boost. Injuries happen, and in my opinion, when they happen, that’s what’s important.”
Second-year linebacker Vontarrius Dora and free agent acquisition Kasim Edebali were behind Ray and All-Pro Von Miller on the depth chart entering training camp. Free agent rookie Ken Ekanem (Virginia Tech) is also competing for a roster spot.
The team feels confident in Edebali, according to the head coach.
“We signed Edebali in the offseason from New Orleans for his rushing skills. He’s a guy that’s going to help us rush from the SAM position and stop the run that’s forced on the edge. He’s capable, we’re excited about him.”
