The Colorado Avalanche have been on the search for a new head coach, and Colorado hockey fans are curious as to what direction the Avalanche will go to fill the position.
The season starts in a little over a month, and it sounds as if they are close to making a decision
“The Avalanche are conducting interviews, and they have unveiled secrecy over the organization,” the Denver Post’s Terry Frei told The Big Show with Irv and Joe on Mile High Sports Radio. “Mike Chambers and I have been quite heroic in coming up with bona fide names the Avalanche are considering and looking at. The names we’ve had in The Denver Post are people who were or are being seriously considered. Bob Boughner and Kevin Dineen went through and had very impressive interviews with the Avalanche.”
Boughner, 45, is coming off his first season with the Sharks as an assistant coach. He was also Joe Sakic‘s teammate with the Avalanche before retiring. In 2004-05 he served as NHLPA vice president during the lockout.
Dineen, 52, has spent the last two seasons as the Blackhawks assistant coach. He was Florida’s head coach for three seasons which included the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season.
The organization, though, remains quiet.
“The Avalanche won’t even confirm names,” Frei said. “That’s their policy, and so we are aggressively working to get the names out there, and we feel we have done so.”
Patrick Roy quit on August 11 after coaching Colorado for three seasons. In those three years he led the team to one Stanley Cup Playoffs appearance, losing to the Minnesota Wild in the first round.
