On Thursday, A.J. McCarron officially became a unrestricted free-agent when he won his grievance against the Cincinnati Bengals. Now, he’ll be free to sign with any team, with speculation by that he could fit in Denver with the Broncos.
McCarron — who will be 28 in week two of the season — has a very small sample size playing in the NFL. With only three starts in his career, McCarron has six career touchdowns and two interceptions. The 6’3”, 220-lb passer from Alabama was drafted in 2014 in the fifth round, and has been waiting for his opportunity to see action as a starter.
But with Andy Dalton holding down the starting spot in Cincinnati, McCarron became an asset that the Bengals nearly moved at the trade deadline last year, only for the trade to fall apart when the Cleveland Browns failed to file the paperwork by the 4 p.m. deadline on Oct. 31. Cincinnati would’ve reportedly received a second- and a third-round pick from Cleveland in return.
Breaking down McCarron and his possible fit in Denver is Broncos Blitz podcast host Ronnie Kohrt. In the latest edition of the Broncos Blitz podcast, Ronnie discusses McCarron’s play and who he resembles most at quarterback, what McCarron was like in Cincinnati — and how his availability effects Denver’s decision-making.
