The Denver Broncos are considering playing Bradley Roby at free safety. Roby was Denver’s first round pick in the 2014 NFL draft. He was drafted as cornerback, but according to the Denver Posts’ Mike Klis, Broncos General Manager John Elway has been discussing the possibility of moving Roby to the free safety position.
With the departure of Rahim Moore to the Houston Texans, Denver needed desperately to fill the safety position. The team did sign safety Darrian Stewart, but Roby could give Stewart starting role competition.
“He can tackle he’s tough and that safety has to be a cover guy there,” Elway said of the team’s first-round draft pick who had a fine rookie season in 2014. “There area lot of different combinations you need to play because the game is changing. Instead of having a strong safety, you want both of them to play center field.”
Roby proved last season that he could be inserted anywhere on the defense and be productive. He recorded 65 tackles, two interceptions, and one sack for the Broncos defense last season. Plus, Bradley Roby has the physical build (5’11”, 192 lbs,) and the football skill set to compete at the free safety position.
There were rumors that cornerback Kayvon Webster would be making the transition to the safety position, but the rumors were false. If Roby moves to safety, Webster would receive more playing time at the cornerback position.
