The Denver Broncos cut quarterback Chad Kelly on Wednesday morning, one day after an early-morning incident on Tuesday in which Kelly was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal trespassing.

9News’ Mike Klis first reported Kelly’s release after the 24-year-old apparently entered the home of a young family and sat down on the couch next to a woman who was holding her child. The Arapahoe County police report stated that a man that lived there struck Kelly with part of a vacuum cleaner before Kelly left without further incident.

He was later found in his car near the Gothic Theater – where the Broncos’ Von Miller was hosting a Halloween party for fellow players – where he was arrested.

According to Klis, multiple sources report that not only did Kelly attend that party, but was removed from it after acting belligerently. Following that altercation, Kelly left the theatre before apparently wandering into the family’s home. Kelly appeared in court on Tuesday morning, and his case is scheduled to be heard on Nov. 8.

Kelly, the Broncos’ seventh-round pick in the NFL Draft, and the last selection overall, had a history of off-field incidents prior to the draft and was kicked off Clemson’s roster for conduct detrimental to the team in 2014.

Former Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan, who was awarded to the Broncos on waivers in early September, takes Kelly’s place as starter Case Keenum’s backup.

The Broncos released a statement following Kelly’s release, in which general manager John Elway said, “This was a decision that we made as an organization. After reviewing all the information and in talking with [head coach] Vance (Joseph) and [team president] Joe (Ellis), we agreed that releasing Chad was the right thing to do.

“Even though Chad’s no longer part of our team, we’ve offered to help him however we can and are supportive of him in every possible way.”
