With several NFL teams on the hunt for a new general manager, the Broncos were faced with a challenge. Not only did they need to complete the interviews they wanted, but Denver had to do so quickly to avoid losing out on a preferred candidate to another franchise.

On Wednesday morning, the Broncos found their man in George Paton.

Paton has spent the last 14 years with the Minnesota Vikings with his most recent position being Vice President of Player Personnel and Assistant General Manager. In total, Paton has 20 years experience as an executive in the NFL.

Upon the announcement, Paton posted this video message to Broncos Country.

“It is an honor to be named General Manager of an iconic franchise with a championship tradition like the Denver Broncos,” Paton said in a statement. “This organization has great resources, tremendous people, a talented young core of players and an outstanding coaching staff.”

As with any high-ranking executive position, Paton will have a lot on his plate in his new role with Denver. He will have to decide which Broncos free agents to try to keep and which to allow to sign with other teams. Answering the question of “Is Drew Lock ‘the guy’” will also top the list, including whether to bring in a veteran quarterback to challenge Lock or perhaps add another young arm through the 2021 NFL Draft.

Answers to those questions will come soon enough, but with John Elway leaving the GM position earlier this month an important first step has been taken for the 2021 Broncos season.
