The Broncos will face a huge test of their run defense during the opening weeks of the season, an area Tom Helmer and Renaud Notaro say is the primary area of weakness on that side of the ball.
Denver released its first depth chart of the season Monday afternoon and Helmer and Notaro (Mile High Sports AM 1340 | 6-8 p.m.) say there’s plenty of reason to be concerned about the Broncos defensive line and its ability to stop the run.
From Derek Wolfe, who Notaro believes has underperformed throughout his career and will miss the first four games of the season to a PED suspension, to Sylvester Williams, who is being asked to play nose tackle in a 3-4 defense despite being undersized for the role, to the depth at tackle and both guard positions, the issues in the middle of the d-line are widespread.
Arnie Stapleton, writer for the Associated Press, also jumped in on the conversation and expressed his concerns about the special teams unit, which featured several surprises, and offered insight on the offensive line and the differences between a Gary Kubiak camp and a John Fox camp. Most notably, Stapleton says the team “slept walked” through practices under Fox.
