After bouncing around from team to team early in his career, defensive end Shelby Harris is hoping he has finally found home in Denver. Following a breakout season with the Broncos, Harris is looking to build off of his success from last season and become a perennial player for the Broncos’ defense.
Speaking to Eric Goodman & Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, Shelby Harris talked about being able to finally practice with pads and a potential payday in the future.
The Broncos were able to put on ‘shells’ Tuesday after starting the first three days of training camp with no contact. Harris noted that he does not see much a difference between ‘shells’ and full pads. “Not really, shells are the same as pads,” Harris said. “We are still out there banging and hitting, so there is not really much of a difference.”
The Broncos’ dismal offensive line surrendered 44 sacks last season, but Harris was adamant about their improvement and overall physicality in practice. “They have a different mind set this year, they’re out here playing hard and pushing us to play as hard as we can and be the best we can be.”
The rise in confidence from the Broncos’ offense stems from the addition of quarterback Case Keenum. “You have a leader; you have someone that is out there pushing the offense to be the best that they can be,” Harris said. Broncos guard Ron Leary had mutual feelings about Keenum’s impact in the huddle.
Harris made his presence known last season after blocking a critical field-goal attempt on Monday Night Football against the San Diego Chargers to cement the Broncos’ win. Harris went on to record 5.5 sacks and 34 tackles for the Broncos last season. An unrestricted free agent after the season, Harris could be in line for a contract extension with another productive campaign.
