Pro Football Focus (PFF) has ranked the Denver Broncos offensive line at number 15 in their latest NFL offensive line rankings. This mid-table ranking suggests a notable improvement for a unit that has faced its share of challenges in recent years.

Last year, quarterback Russell Wilson endured 45 sacks, which might suggest a struggling offensive line. However, PFF attributed only 16 of those sacks directly to the line. This discrepancy highlights how much of the team’s offensive inefficiency did not fall on its shoulders.

Standout performers and solid bookends

Quinn Meinerz emerged as the linchpin of the unit, earning PFF’s recognition as the team’s best offensive lineman following his breakout 2023 season. His performance anchored the interior and set a high standard for the group.

The tackle duo of Mike McGlinchey and Garett Bolles also drew praise. Despite a challenging start, McGlinchey showed marked improvement throughout the season, ultimately ranking 39th among NFL tackles in PFF’s grading system. Together with Bolles, they form what PFF describes as a “strong duo on the edges,” providing reliable protection on the outside.

However, the center position remains a point of uncertainty following Lloyd Cushenberry III’s departure to the Tennessee Titans. While ESPN’s unofficial depth chart currently lists Sam Mustipher as the starter – a recent signing who started for the Baltimore Ravens last season – the situation is far from settled.

Alex Forsyth, a 2023 seventh-round draft pick, is emerging as a strong contender for the starting role. Despite spending his rookie season on the practice squad, Forsyth has consistently impressed both general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton with his work ethic and football IQ. His familiarity with likely starting quarterback Bo Nix from their time together at the University of Oregon could prove to be a valuable asset.

The Payton factor and future outlook

The competition at center will be one of the key storylines to watch as the Broncos head into training camp. Forsyth’s development and potential chemistry with Nix could give him an edge, but Mustipher’s NFL experience shouldn’t be discounted. This position battle will likely have a significant impact on the offensive line’s overall performance and cohesion.

Head coach Sean Payton’s influence on the offensive line cannot be overstated. His track record of developing strong offensive lines in New Orleans bodes well for Denver’s unit. Payton’s offensive acumen and emphasis on protection could further elevate the line’s performance in the coming season.

Looking ahead, the Broncos’ offensive line has enough upside to exceed their current ranking. If Forsyth can solidify the center position, and if Meinerz continues his upward trajectory, the interior of the line could become a strength. Coupled with the solid tackle play from McGlinchey and Bolles, Denver’s offensive line could emerge as one of the better units in the league.
