Last spring, after the Denver Broncos drafted wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie out of Georgia, Broncos fans were buzzing after seeing mercury-quick bolt around the field with his amazing speed and agility last season. Fumbles and questionable decision-making muted that excitement, and now McKenzie finds himself in a battle just to make the roster.
Speaking to Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, McKenzie joined the show to discuss his expectations, and how he thinks he’ll bounce back this season.
“Last year, I was pretty confident, but when it came to those drops, it was like my confidence level went down. This year, I had to let it all go and know that I can catch the ball — and I’ve got to make the right decisions,” McKenzie said. “It got real tough. I had some guys in the locker room tell me I’ve got to do my job. Some guys said [to] try and learn from it. I took each and every word — negative, positive — and I had to take heed of it and learn the lessons I’ve got to learn.”
After being in a “dark” place last season, McKenzie used the offseason to reflect and reboot. “I’ve got to make better decisions out on the field, because I know I can catch it,” he said. He’ll also face challenges at wide receiver in splashy rookies Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton. “I’ve got to do my job; nobody is going to do my job for me. That’s what I told myself this year when I got here.”
