The Denver Broncos sack opponents more than any other team in football.
This year, Denver led the NFL with 63 quarterback sacks. It was also the most-ever in Broncos franchise history for a single season.
But will their pass-rushing prowess be nullified by Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills offensive line this Sunday in the Wild Card playoff game?
Denver Broncos sack more QBs than any team, but Bills sack rate is lowest in NFL
Denver’s defense, led by Vance Joseph, has been phenomenal this season.
Remember, they cut ties with safety and veteran leader Justin Simmons before the season. They also let linebacker Josey Jewell walk, and replaced Fabian Moreau with second-year standout Riley Moss at cornerback.
Despite those changes, they finished third in points allowed (18.3 per game), third in red zone scoring percentage (46.9%), and first in sacks (63).
In fact, it wasn’t even close. The Broncos sack total was nine more than the next closest team in the Ravens, who had 54.0 on the season.
Call them the Blue Blitz defense.
Nik Bonitto was the breakout star along the defensive line for the Broncos this year. His 13.5 sacks were a career-high as he played a lot like Von Miller. Jonathan Cooper on the other side of the line racked up 10.5 sacks of his own. And then there was unsung hero and defensive tackle Zach Allen, who had a career-high 8.5 sacks and an NFL-high 40 QB hits. Those are incredible numbers for an interior defensive lineman.
And as of Friday morning, Allen and Bonitto were each named Second-Team All-Pros by the Associated Press. (Pat Surtain, Marvin Mims, and Quinn Meinerz each named First-Team All-Pro.)
But, is Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills O-line the Broncos kryptonite?
The Bills line allowed a mere 0.8 sacks per game, which was lowest in the NFL this year. Not only that, ESPN’s Pass Block Win Rate has Buffalo at 4th, winning 68% of their snaps.
Bonitto and Cooper–as well as Jonah Elliss–will have their hands full against Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown, the Bills tackles. Each of them finished in the top-15 among tackles in PBWR.
Josh Allen’s running ability could cancel out Denver’s pass rush
It’s not just that the Bills tackles are great at slowing pass rushers, but Allen’s escapability makes him incredibly difficult to tackle anywhere on the field, especially behind the line of scrimmage.
His 14 sacks were the least of any starting QB this year, and he used his legs more in the second half of the season when games meant more. Against three playoff teams down the stretch–the Rams, Chiefs, and Lions–Allen ran the ball with reckless abandon.
He ran for a 26-yard game-clinching touchdown against the Chiefs late in the 4th quarter. Allen ran three touchdowns in against the Rams to keep that wild shootout close. And he again used his legs to milk the clock and beat the Lions in another shootout.
All told, Allen rushed for 12 touchdowns this season. Nine of the scores came in the last seven games of the year. (This doesn’t include Week 18 in which he took one snap but didn’t play.)
He was a huge reason why the Bills became the first NFL team in history to pass for 30 touchdowns and rush for 30 touchdowns in the same season.
While Denver Broncos rookie Bo Nix played great this year and exceeded expectations, Josh Allen can completely take a game over.
If the Broncos sack by the blitz, Allen will likely do one of two things. He will either take off and gain yards on the ground, or he’ll spread the ball around to his receivers.
It was a similar recipe for success for Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in their 41-10 win over Denver. Jackson earned a perfect passer rating that day and didn’t even have to run to beat the Broncos.
It should be noted the Broncos only sacked Jackson once that day, and they averaged 3.7 sacks per game this year.
Similarly, Allen was only sacked three times once this season, and it was a blowout loss to those same Ravens. One of those was a sack-fumble, which the Ravens capitalized on to build their big lead.
There’s a reason why the Bills are 8.5-point favorites over the Broncos. Many experts believe Buffalo will easily beat Denver this Sunday. But there is a recipe for success for the Broncos.
They need to sack Allen three-plus times on the day. The defense also needs to force at least one turnover, and multiple would be better. Offensively, Bo Nix needs to be near-perfect like he was against the Chiefs B-team last week. That group can’t afford a turnover and needs to be extremely efficient scoring the ball. Add in a big punt return from Marvin Mims for good measure, and Denver could win.
The Broncos (10-7) and Bills (13-4) face off on Wild Card Weekend on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. MT on CBS.
