Joe Flacco has been benched in Baltimore and it seems not only his era has concluded, but John Harbaugh’s as well.
And what do you know, the Denver Broncos are soon to be looking for a new head coach, and possibly a different starting quarterback, as well. Yes, Case Keenum was signed for two years and $36 million, but they could cut or trade him, possibly.
Cutting Keenum before Jun. 1 would mean owing him $10 million, and trading him would mean a $3 million payday for the quarterback. His full salary for 2019 is $18 million, and a $3 million signing bonus.
But would the Broncos want to bring in Flacco? And, if they somehow find a way to hire Harbaugh, he just benched the quarterback; would they be able to mend their relationship in a hurry?
Flacco is an 11-year pro who’s played his entire career with the Ravens, being their starter for his entire career. He’s amassed 38,245 yards with 212 touchdowns and 136 interceptions thrown. He’s not a superstar quarterback, but he’s certainly been serviceable, and he’s 10-5 in the playoffs, including a Super Bowl win over San Francisco in 2012.
That, of course, was the year the Ravens devastated Denver with the “Mile High Miracle.”
Flacco to the Broncos seems like a long shot, but if they can come to an understanding, and Harbaugh is hired, it seems more likely he could come to the orange and blue.
Harbaugh, though, would be the bigger get for the Broncos.
He was the head coach to lead the Ravens to that Super Bowl victory, and he’s totaled a 100-69 record as head coach, a solid 59.2 winning percentage.
Denver has Vance Joseph still in charge of the team, but it seems unlikely the Broncos don’t make a move away from him this offseason. The orange and blue are 11-19 (.367) under Joseph in less than two full seasons, and they haven’t been competitive in many games.
Joseph elected to not go for a first down on fourth-and-1 from the Browns 6-yard line last night, leaving many to wonder how the Broncos could possibly continue with him as the head coach any longer.
Harbaugh would be a massive hire for the Broncos; he’s a long-time head coach who’s pushed his team into successful situations for many years. He’s the kind of leader, with the necessary experience, Denver needs to regain their place among the best teams in the NFL.
