The Denver Broncos on Monday tendered restricted free-agent Tony Carter.

The seventh year cornerback received the tender that will still allow other teams to outbid the Broncos offer. The non-guaranteed offer is for just over $1.5 million dollars per spotrac.com.

Carter is a talented cornerback but his small frame (5’ 9”, 175 pounds) has contributed to his current spot as the fifth cornerback on the roster behind Bradley Roby and Keyvon Webster. His play time was limited in 2014 after Roby began to perform well in his rookie season.

Pro Football Focus gave Carter a -1.9 overall grade after only playing in 87 snaps last season. He played 35 snaps in week one and did not play in a game until week 13.

According to the Broncos’ released statement Monday, his career totals include 42 tackles, three interceptions and 22 passes defended. He also participated in five postseason games, recording six tackles.

The tender Monday appears to mean they value his play and will need him for depth in the secondary. With cornerbacks reportedly agreeing to deals quickly in free agency and for high dollar amounts, the Broncos want to let Carter know how much they are willing to pay him to stay with the team.
