Broncos vs. Panthers Betting Preview

The Broncos and Panthers are both sitting at 4-8 and would need miracles to make a run at a playoff spot. At this point in the season, both teams are playing for their pride. The chance to win a few games and carry some momentum into next season is still on the table.

The Panthers are coming into this game well-rested after their bye week. Meanwhile, the Broncos might have lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 13, but there were some positives to take away from that loss.

Melvin Gordon had his best game of the season, rushing for 131 yards on just 15 carries. Quarterback Drew Lock wasn’t perfect — he threw two costly interceptions — but he did throw two big touchdowns to keep the Broncos within striking distance.

Defensively, Denver bent, but they rarely broke. Potential NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes was held to one touchdown for just the second time this season. If the Broncos can play like they did against the Chiefs, they will have a good chance at upsetting the Panthers.

Broncos vs. Panthers Betting Trends

Why Backing The Broncos Makes Sense

Rushing Attack

The Panthers struggle against the run. Although they are around league-average in rushing yards per game, they rank 26th in yards per carry. If the Broncos can commit to Gordon and Phillip Lindsay early, they might be able to dictate the pace of the game. Denver is 12th in the NFL with 118.9 rushing yards per game.

Lindsay was held to just 26 yards on 14 carries against the Chiefs, but as recently as Week 11 he ran for 82 yards at over 5.0 yards per carry. Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur has the luxury of having two reliable running backs he can lean on. When Gordon struggles, Lindsay can step up and vice-versa.

Defense Wins Games

Although their record might not show it, the Broncos defense has been solid all year long. It’s the inconsistent offense that loses games for Denver. The Panthers have put up points on some great teams this year, but the Broncos might be able to slow down this Carolina offense.

Despite ranking in the bottom half of the NFL in scoring defense, the Broncos are top 10 in passing defense (218.7 YPG) and 14th in total defense (350.2 YPG). When Denver can get to the quarterback, they usually have success. The Broncos are eighth in the league in sacks with 32.

Why Backing The Panthers Makes Sense

Bye Week

So far in 2020, NFL teams are 17-13 after the bye week. The Panthers should be the more rested team entering this game and the extra week to prepare is not something we should underestimate. The Broncos will have their work cut out for them against Carolina.

Panthers Passing Prowess

The Panthers are not nearly as dangerous as Kansas City’s passing attack but don’t sleep on this Carolina offense. Although Teddy Bridgewater is no superstar, he’s capable of taking over a game.

The journeyman quarterback has developed incredible chemistry with his top two targets — Robby Anderson and D.J. Moore. Anderson is leading the team in receptions with 75 to go along with 912 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Moore is tops on the team in reception yards (924) and touchdowns (4).

The Broncos have shown that they are capable of slowing down high-flying offenses this year, but they should not underestimate these Panthers.

How To Bet The Total

The Broncos have gone under on the total points at DraftKings Sportsbook in their last four games. They are 5-7 on over-unders in 2020 compared to Carolina’s record of 6-5-1.

If Denver has their way, they will slow the game down and pound the rock on the ground. However, if the Panthers can take an early lead, it will force the Broncos to rely on Drew Lock. We’ve seen Lock lead the Broncos on an epic comeback against the Chargers already this year, but those standout performances have been few and far between.

Broncos vs. Panthers Prediction

This game is going to be a tale of two opposites. The Broncos are strong on defense and the ground. Conversely, the Panthers like to air the ball out to their two-deep threat wide receivers.

Although the Broncos looked good against the Chiefs last week, the bye gives the Panthers the upper hand coming into this one. Carolina is going to win a low-scoring game that should come down the final few possessions.
