The Denver Broncos’ quarterback room now has an open seat, as the team announced that Nick Stevens was waived Thursday. The rookie out of Colorado State originally signed with the Broncos on May 17 after working out for the Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins in the spring.
Stevens put up big numbers during his senior season at CSU, throwing for 3,799 yards and 29 touchdowns with only 10 interceptions on the year. With Stevens under center, the CSU offense ranked ranked second in the country in third down conversion percentage (50.3), eighth in first downs and 11th in overall offense.
Despite lighting up the statsheet, Stevens did not receive much attention nationally prior to the NFL Draft. He did do enough to earn a chance with the Broncos though, even after the team had stated publicly it would not pursue another QB prior to signing Stevens in May.
With Stevens no longer in the mix, the Broncos now have three quarterbacks on the current roster with Case Keenum, Chad Kelly and Paxton Lynch. Kelly and Lynch are expected to compete for the backup position behind Keenum, who the team signed in March.
Along with Stevens, the Broncos also waived longshapper Christian Kuntz Thursday according to Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post.
