Denver Broncos running back C.J. Anderson is a known “gamer” — as in video gamer. Anderson regularly streams his video game play on Twitch, and it’s not unusual during the offseason (or even sometimes during the season) to see him issue a public challenge to his followers on social media. On Wednesday he issued another challenge, although this one had to do with his full-time job.
As Anderson and the Broncos have suffered through an eight-game losing streak, more and more blame is being put on first-year head coach Vance Joseph by fans and the media.
Solving the problem and getting the team back on track isn’t as simple as the video game world might make it seem, Anderson says.
“Everybody can play ‘Madden’ on rookie and go 16-0,” Anderson told the gathered Denver media. “That’s how I look at it. You know, everybody can pick ‘Madden’ and go, ‘I’m going to start with the Patriots or the Broncos’ — [with] overall 92 [ratings]. You rarely hear people on social media starting their team off with the Browns, overall, or the Bears who overall ain’t too high. So, that’s how I look at it.
“If you think you can do what Coach Joseph do — If you think you can get up in here at 6:30 in the morning and leave at 11 at night, be my guest. Be my guest.”
Anderson made no bones about how badly his fellow players want to end this losing streak and take some of the pressure off Joseph.
“We all are sick and tired of losing. I don’t know if y’all understand how much losing bothers people because y’all are not in it. You don’t feel it. It’s like going to your job everyday and it sucks. It just sucks. You’re talking to other players around the league and you’re seeing fun celebrations that you never got a chance to do. It just sucks,” Anderson said.
The Broncos will try and snap their losing streak against a surprising Jets team that is 5-7 and coming off a home win over another AFC West team, Kansas City.
Anderson knows that a win at this point in the season would be a huge boost for the 3-9 Broncos, who are trying to close out the final four games on a positive note.
“A win would just be good for everybody. It would be good confidence-wise and good in the locker room. Just playing a clean game of football. That’s all we’ve been asking for all season. Can we just play one clean game of football and see how it comes out? We’ve proven that if we play a clean game of football we can dominate football games. We have not been playing a clean game of football in 60 days,” Anderson said.
Real life plays out differently than video games, and this season is proving it.
