On Tuesday night Colorado Rockies pitcher Tyler Chatwood pitched five of his best innings as a major league pitcher, not allowing a hit and walking only two batters. Then, the the third time around the Padres lineup, San Diego’s hitters figured him out and saddled him with five earned runs.
Manager Bud Black spoke after the game about what went wrong for Chatwood in the forgettable fifth.
“I think the third time through the lineup they got onto the fastball,” Black said.
He went on to explain that he thinks Chatwood will view this from a learning perspective.
“I think Tyler learned a valuable lesson today about the ability to change speeds as the game goes on,” he said. “[Yangervis] Solarte jumped on a fastball, [Will] Myers jumped on a 3-2 fastball, [Ryan] Schimpf, the third baseman, jumped on a fastball.”
Black didn’t put Colorado’s 6-2 loss on Chatwood. He said that the Rockies inability to handle Padres pitcher Trevor Cahill’s off-speed pitches is what ultimately doomed the Rockies.
The Rockies can redeem themselves Wednesday night against the Padres, while Chatwood is slated to make his next start on Sunday at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
