Ever since the Denver Broncos lost in Washington on Christmas Eve, many players started actively recruiting quarterback Kirk Cousins in an effort to lure him to Denver.
It didn’t work — Cousins reportedly agreed to terms with the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday — but late Monday night, the Broncos landed the next best option. 30-year-old Case Keenum had the best season of his career by far, helping to lead the Vikings to the NFC Championship game, and now he’s a Denver Bronco.
Perennial Pro Bowl cornerback Chris Harris Jr. didn’t seem to consider going from the notion of adding Cousins to the reality of Keenum landing with Denver as much of a downgrade.
In an interview with Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, Harris was enthusiastic. “We’re excited. I think Case had a great season last year,” Harris said. “I think we’ll get a couple more pieces on offense — I think he should be able to do the job.”
It wasn’t much of a secret that the Broncos’ defense was too often hung out to dry by the offense’s poor play last season, and more than a few of Denver’s defenders voiced that over the course of their disastrous, 5-11 campaign. Harris, however, thinks that with the addition of Keenum, the Broncos’ offense is trending in the right direction.
“I think everybody should be happy; we got a guy who took his team to the NFC Championship. He showed that he could win and make the throws,” Harris said. “Still, when you come here [to Denver], it’s a different level of pressure. You’re in an organization that expects to win — and expects a lot of the quarterback. So he has a lot of pressure on him, but I think [if] we get some key pieces around him, we’ll make his job easier.”
