It was a bit of a fluke last night given some of the controversial calls made by the officials, but the Denver Nuggets lost their second clutch game of the season.

Denver’s only played five games total, and the only have two losses. Unfortunately, both losses have ended in a similar way with the Nuggets holding a late lead only to watch it slip away in the closing seconds. Denver’s inability to execute at the end of games has prevented them from being 5-0 to start the year.

Is this a long term issue? Almost assuredly not. Denver’s been one of the best clutch teams in NBA history during the Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray era, almost always finding ways to win in difficult situations when the game gets close at the end. I expect they will figure things out before too long.

But for now, it’s a concern.

On the latest episode of Pickaxe and Roll, Ryan Blackburn breaks down the loss to the Portland Trail Blazers that ended with some controversial calls going against the Denver Nuggets. Denver lost another game in the clutch, and some of the struggles looked a lot like the struggles on opening night. Ryan discusses the loss, some thoughts on Christian Braun, and what to look for going forward.
