The Colorado Rapids have recalled midfielder Emmanuel Appiah from the Charlotte Independence, the club’s USL affiliate.

The Ghana-born defensive midfielder spent five years with the University of Cincinnati before being drafted by the Rapids 15th overall in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft in Baltimore. Colorado signed Appiah on March 4, and appeared in two games for the Independence before being called up Monday.

“We monitored Emmanuel’s progress during his time on loan with Charlotte, and we believe that this was a good time to bring him back to the first team in the short-term to strengthen our squad,” Rapids technical director Paul Bravo told coloradorapids.com.

Appiah impressed scouts with his passing at the MLS Combine back in January. He joins an already well-occupied midfield with Sam Cronin, Dillon Powers, Dillon Serna and Marco Pappa, who is slowly but steadily reaching good health again.

This is the club’s second newcomer in two weeks, as Colorado brought up Dennis Castillo on June 14.
