The Colorado Rapids will face FC Dallas on July 29 in the fifth round of the U.S. Open Cup, after advancing past Colorado Springs 1-0 Tuesday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Colorado and Dallas last faced off in the Open Cup in 2004, where the Rapids dropped a 3-0 decision to the then Dallas Burn.
The Rapids were placed in the Plains Region and are joined by Dallas, the Houston Dynamo and defending champion Sporting Kansas City.
Colorado is 11-14-0 all time in their 15 Open Cup appearances, and has finished as high as second place in 1999. Last year, they won their fourth round match against Colorado Springs 4-1 before dropping a 1-0 decision to the Dynamo in the fifth round.
FC Dallas played Oklahoma City Energy FC to a 2-2 draw Wednesday night before advancing 6-5 on penalties Last year, Dallas got as far as the fifth round before bowing out to Sporting KC. Dallas is led by 2014 MLS Rookie of the Year Tesho Akindele, who leads the team with five goals one the season.
Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. Mountain time from Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
