Those looking to see prized free agent acquisition Ian Desmond suit up for the Colorado Rockies (one that matters, at least), may have to wait. The newly converted first baseman fractured his hand on Sunday.
In the fourth inning of Sunday’s 9-8 Cactus League loss to the Cincinnati Reds, Desmond took a 93-mph fastball to the hand from pitcher Rookie Davis. He is set to see a hand specialist on Monday.
“At least it’s spring; you never like to see these things at any time, but he’ll bounce back from this,” Rockies manager Bud Black said.
Desmond signed a five-year, $70 million this offseason. After spending most of his career as a shortstop, he converted to the outfield, again finding success. The Rockies are hoping the 31-year-old can have a similarly smooth transition to first.
Typically, similar injuries to Desmond’s take at least a month to heal (according to the Denver Post). In the interim, the Rockies will likely turn to Mark Reynolds; who, after starting for the team last season, is in camp on a minor-league contract.
