Ever since Coach Prime stole No. 1 all-time rated cornerback recruit Travis Hunter from the Florida State Seminoles, and convinced him to instead go to tiny Jackson State University, he’s been rightfully known as one of the most dangerous recruiters in the college football landscape.
With Jason Robinson de-committing from the University of Southern California, recently after a trip to Boulder, it appears Coach Prime could be set to add another chapter to that mythos surrounding him.
Robinson is a 4-Star wide receiver in the 2024 recruiting class out of California. He has a 0.912 composite score from 247Sports, which makes him the No. 33 wide receiver, the No. 23 California-based player, and the No. 249 player overall.
He committed to the USC Trojans on September 25th, 2021, just two weeks after they offered him, and has been committed to them ever since. Now, a little over two weeks after visiting the University of Colorado campus, Robinson has de-committed, and he’s back on the market.
It seems like, in hindsight, Robinson feels he was too quick with his commitment process and wanted to open up his recruiting process in order to give more programs consideration.
“I still love USC and I’m still considering them moving forward. I committed so early that I don’t think I really had a chance to evaluate all the options that were out there for me,” Robinson told 247Sports national recruiting expert Greg Biggins. “I know it’s a risk and when I called (USC wide receiver and assistant head coach Dennis) Simmons, he told me they can’t guarantee that I’ll still have a spot if I wanted to re-commit but I think this is the best thing for me. I’ve only been to a few other schools and I want to see what it’s like out there and see if there’s another school that’s an even better all-around fit.”
As for where that glass-slipper fit could be, Robinson highlighted the Colorado Buffaloes and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as two teams that really interested him.
“I really loved it out there,” Robinson said, via Biggins. “I had no idea it was going to be like that. Originally, I didn’t even want to go but my mom kind of talked me in to it but I had a great trip and learned a lot about the school. I really like [wide receivers] coach (Brett) Bartolone a lot,” Robinson said. “He’s a really good dude and easy to talk with. I can tell he would be a fun coach to play for and I like his vision for the program and I think they’re about to do big things there.”
And of course, Coach Prime’s undeniable charisma played a large role.
“It was great talking with coach Prime,” Robinson gushed. “He was dropping so much knowledge on me. It felt like everything he said was a gem and the energy he has and the rest of the staff have is incredible.”
If Robinson ultimately chooses Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes, he’d become Colorado’s third-highest-rated recruit overall and their highest-rated offensive recruit (unless Ju’Juan Johnson decides to play quarterback instead of cornerback) in the 2024 class.
