Those looking for a silver lining in Colorado’s three-game sweep at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks don’t need to look too far down the batting order. Charlie Blackmon, hitting in the leadoff spot, homered for the second night in a row and the fourth time in the past seven days. Just one spot down in the order, DJ LeMahieu tallied three hits and boosted his batting average to .346 on the season. The Rockies second baseman now just .002 points behind Daniel Murphy in the chase for the National League batting crown.
Unfortunately for Colorado, those, along with a Daniel Descalso two-run home run, were the lone highlights on a night that again saw Arizona post double-digit runs against a beleaguered Rockies pitching staff. In the three-game series, Colorado allowed a total of 34 runs and 50 to the D-Backs over 24 innings. It was the first home sweep of the season for Arizona and the 266 runs scored in the season series with the Diamondbacks was the highest combined total in the divisional era.
The Rockies are off on Thursday and will begin a six-game home stand on Friday. Colorado faces San Diego for a weekend series before hosting the St. Louis Cardinals next week.
