Colorado Rockies prospect David Dahl has made the tough decision to have his spleen removed, his agency announced on Twitter.

Dahl – the Rockies second highest rated prospect by MLB.com – was involved in a brutal collision in the outfield on Thursday while playing for Double-A New Britain. The outfielder crashed into second baseman Juan Ciriaco as they both pursued a popup in center field. Ciriaco’s knee did the most damage as it struck Dahl in the torso and head areas. The outfielder was taken to the hospital where doctors found internal bleeding and performed an emergency surgery to attempt to save his spleen, reported Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports. Originally, it was feared Dahl may have broken ribs and a concussion as well, but the Rockies announced that tests came back negative on those injuries.
Dahl would have had to sit out the remainder of the season recovering, but removing the spleen gives him a chance to return this year.
Dahl was the Rockies top selection, 10th overall, in the 2012 draft. The 21-year-old is batting .269 with three homeruns and 16 RBIs this season in Double-A. He took to Twitter the morning after the incident.
