When the Chargers pack up and move, they’ll be leaving behind a fan base in San Diego and hoping to gain a new one in Los Angeles. Chargers Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts says the only way the Chargers can do that is to win, and win with style.
Fouts joined longtime friend Gary “Coach” Eklund alongside “Doc” and “Masher” on Absolutely Sports on Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 on Saturday to share his thoughts on the Chargers’ move.
“It’s really mind-boggling when you think about it,” Fouts said. “The history of the Chargers, the fans and all the great friends we’ve made over the years there, I know it’s just devastating for the city and so many fans.”
Fouts says the relocation comes with major challenges for the future fan base in L.A.
“In L.A.,” Fouts said, “you’ve got to not only win – like every city – but you’ve got to win with style and something that captures the imagination and the entertainment dollar there.”
The man charged with that mission is new head coach, Anthony Lynn, who came over from Buffalo after Mike McCoy was fired.
“He’s a hard-nosed [guy]. No bull about him. He’s a guy who will hopefully get things turned around for the Los Angeles Chargers,” Fouts said, taking a moment to make sure he got the name right.
Fouts had to agree that saying “Los Angeles Chargers” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue quite yet.
San Diego may not be the only AFC West opponent relocating this offseason. The Oakland Raiders have filed paperwork for their move to Las Vegas, as well. The two teams ranked last (Raiders) and second-to-last (Chargers) in attendance in 2016, each averaging less than 60,000 fans per game. In 2017 the Chargers will play at StubHub Center, home to the Los Angeles Galaxy, with a capacity of around 30,000 for Chargers games.
