On Thursday night, ESPN dropped an NFL bombshell; a story of how the New England Patriots are reportedly dealing with internal strife, stemming in part from Tom Brady’s fear of being replaced by notoriously cold-blooded coach Bill Belichick.
A story that — once upon a time — the Denver Broncos also experienced, involving former head coach Dan Reeves and Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway.
In an interview with Gil Whiteley and Mark Jackson of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, Reeves explained his similar situation with Denver, and can understand what Belichick was going through.
“I had an opportunity and a chance to get Tommy Maddox, and I made that decision because I felt like he would play behind John, for as long as John wanted to play,” Reeves said.
“[Then] we would have a quarterback that would be ready to go, but you can understand how a quarterback feels, a Tom Brady, or a John Elway — that you’re looking to replace him.”
“I’m sure that Belichick was looking for Garoppolo to be that guy to replace him, so I’m sure when they wanted to trade him, he wasn’t exactly excited about it, but the owner was in Brady’s pocket. And he had won so many games for [them].”
“He kind of took his side…it’s always a lot of things that can happen in those situations that get people a little bit sideways.”
