The Denver Broncos are making a switch at quarterback because of poor play; turnovers in specific. It’s priority number one for new Broncos starting quarterback Brock Osweiler.
Former Broncos head coach Dan Reeves joined Anything’s Possible with Gil Whiteley and Mark Jackson, to discuss Osweiler’s ability to manage the game, and what that entails.
“You can’t turn the football over,” said Reeves. “That’s the number one thing a quarterback has to do. You’ve got to make good decisions — give your team a chance to win by not making a mistake, because they’ve got a great defense.”
Osweiler inherits a unique situation, because the Broncos aren’t a cellar-dweller team; they’re very much in the thick of a potential wild-card run, currently sitting one game out of the final wild-card spot. The Broncos have found success through great defensive play, and Reeves speaks to that as a factor moving forward for Osweiler.
“You don’t have to do everything on your own,” Reeves said. “It’s not like the team is on your shoulders. You’ve got to just manage things and give them an opportunity and a chance to win by not making the mistakes that cost you ball games.”
In his first press conference after being named the starting quarterback Tuesday, Osweiler called protecting the football ‘where winning starts’.
“That’s absolutely where it starts. In fact, every week in the National Football League, winning starts with protecting the football,” said Osweiler. “When you win the turnover margin and when you don’t turn the ball over at all, your chances of winning skyrocket.”
