The Denver Broncos will boast quite the pass rush with rookie Bradley Chubb joining the team, but another young pass rusher is eager to show his stuff in OTA’s and beyond in 2017 second round pick DeMarcus Walker.
Walker bounced around the linebacker position recording just seven tackles in 2017 playing a limited role on defense. Now beefing up and switching back to defensive end — a position he played at extensively in college — Walker hopes to make an impact at whatever his coaching staff calls on him to do.
“I just got to do what I was called upon to do,” Walker said. At Florida State on the defensive line, Walker sacked the quarterback 16 times in his senior year in 13 games.
When asked if 2017 was a wasted year because of his position changing and demands for his body to change with it, Walker told Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, 2017 wasn’t a waste at all.
“No, I wouldn’t say a waste of a year. I finished strong like I wanted too, life happens for a reason and I had to get used to it.”
Now it’s rather uncommon for someone to go through a ‘weight gain’ program over a weight loss program, but that’s what Walker is doing — beefing up to play in the trenches and he says he’s getting plenty of help from the person who knows how to feed him best.
“My Mom’s cooking back home,” Walker said when asked how he’s beefing up. “I used to take three meals a day, sometimes two. When I got into the league, that’s done with. I got to take four to five meals a day because the work load is that much more. [Keep the energy up,] that was the biggest thing.”
Beefing up is his immediate goal, but certainly helping the team win is on Walker’s mind for 2018. “Just trying to help the team win. Applying a pass rush on third down — but really — just anything to help the team win.”
